My MacBook Pro is back and working

MacBook ProAfter about 2 months out of action, I finally have my MacBook Pro back and working. Got a whole new logic board in order to fix the Distorted or No Display problem with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics cards (see my previous post: Update to my Macbook Pro blank screen problems for details). Was told that the logic board cost $1800.26 AUD, but thanks to Apple I got it replaced for free (which the tech guy made a big deal out of).

So far it has been working fine, which is so good. I really missed by setup, my 1920 resolution and TextMate. Hopefully there won’t be anymore problems, but at least I know now that Apple is honouring their word on the NVIDIA issue here in Australia and that I still have about another 10 months warranty on the graphics card to cover that problem if it strikes again.

hi helen, i am from hk, and my macbook pro is now suffering from your problem, everything seems to be fine but just keep dark screen.
my applecare has already expired but i know apple will repair for free if it is a problem of graphic card, so i sent to the repairing centre, just for gambling…
my macbook pro now is still being checked, i still don’t know what is going wrong, but i am extremely nervous and frustrated now!! because it will be a nightmare if its not the fault of graphic card, then i need to pay all the terrible repairing fee../
so i would like to ask you, what is the main problem was your macbook pro? only logic board or graphic card? if its only logic board, apple still replaced a new one for you for free?
helen, hope you can reply me since i am now very frustrated and your reply can give me a hope…! thx:)

    Hi geo,

My problem was the graphics card, but in order to replace it they replaced the whole logic board.

While I’ve read in a few places that it is possible to swap out just the graphics card, it seems like the majority of people get the whole logic board replaced (which is the easiest thing to do).

If you are worried you could try calling Apple customer service and see what they say - http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html

    Good luck

    helen,

thank you so much for your reply. just yesterday, the repairing centre called me and told me that it is really the problem of graphic card and they had fixed it for me! lucky!

however, he said that they found a line appears from top to the bottom in the LED monitor(like bright dots…) and asked me whether i wanna pay money and repair it. but there was no line before i sent the macbook pro for repair! it’s ridiculous!! i think i should have a free repair instead. so i just complainted through the technical support. now i am still waiting for their solution:( i am afraid since there was no evidence that there was no line before(i sent it to repair just because of no display… who knows if i am telling a truth??)

i think it should be fine… i am here just to tell you my machine brokedown because of graphic card really. thanks!:D
